Within the process of materials testing and damage analysis the examination results must be documented in detail. The process includes various testing methods such as classical metallography with macroscopic and microscopic part and microstructure examination, hadness testing, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescent X-ray analysis. Results must be recorded using image and meta data, in order to generate reports and certificates.

Audi

In AUDI materials testing, image management is used at 3 different locations in part, material and damage analysis for order processing, image, result and document archiving, as well as for report generation. A heterogeneous network solution combines the most different testing methods, starting from metallography in macroscopic and microscopic part and micro structure judgement, including image analysis, to scanning electron microscopy based using EDX analysis, to micro hardness testing and inorganic analysis procedures (OES; ICP, GDOS, RFA), up to non-destructive testing methods (X-Ray, CT, Thermography). Location cross linking of image management is already partially realised.

The German branch of the world wide network of research and development of Hydro Aluminium, Europe's third largest aluminium group, is located in Bonn. In the metallographic laboratory the microstructure of aluminium cast and worked materials is analysed for a wide variety of applications, from engine blocks to 6 µm films. The tasks are generated from development projects and the from quality assurance groups of the mills, in some cases from external clients.

As a test laboratory offering services in the areas metallography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), damage analysis and biomechanical testing, RMS generates a large number of image documents. In order to handle and archive the images efficiently, the commercial availability of electronic tools for digitisation of image data is realised using the Image Management System ‘ImageAccess'.
